All professional institutes and associations have a responsibility to ensure the quality and competency of their members is set and maintained at consistently high levels. We work and live in rapidly changing technological times which means that our skill and knowledge have to be constantly upgraded beyond our initial qualifications and current work experience.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is considered to be one of the foundations for personal growth and ongoing development in the construction industry. It is defined as “the systematic application and upgrading of a member’s knowledge and skills, through the transfer of information, that will maintain their professional competencies and the further development of their personal qualities and skills, to enable them to continue and better carry out their work-related activities and responsibilities in a more competent and professional manner.”
To provide a platform for members to upgrade their skills and knowledge base, and with the move to licence building practitioners imminent, the NZIOB has taken the decision to make CPD a compulsory element of membership for all members except Honorary, Retired members (all grades) and Student members. However, the CPD system is being introduced and selectively trialled over the remainder of 2007 and the compulsory element will be activated for all members as at the 1st of January 2008.
