Since 2015, the promotion of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in New Zealand is an area that the NZIOB has fully supported and committed resources to. Earlier this month, the Dennis Burns (MNZIOB) Chaired NZ BIM Industry Training Group* undertook a wrap-up of the BIM 101 work package that the NZIOB and the BIM Acceleration Committee (BAC) rolled out across New Zealand in 2016. The BIM 101 Take 2 seminar was recorded in front of a live audience at Unitec in Auckland. The resultant footage is being edited and packaged into a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) module that will serve as an ongoing resource for the wider industry.
Following a NZIOB/BAC survey of New Zealand’s BIM communities in mid-2017, it became evident that there is an appetite from industry for the running of a high-level BIM training course that would be a natural follow-on from BIM 101. The outcome was that members of the BIM NZ Training Group traveled to the UK earlier this year to evaluate the BIM Academy’s highly regarded ‘Virtual Project’ course. Negotiations are currently being undertaken for it be offered locally at Tertiary level in 2018.
In addition, the NZIOB is working with BAC and the BIM NZ Training Group on a fresh initiative, that if realised, will continue to promote the adoption of BIM within the New Zealand construction industry, over the next 12 months.
*The NZ BIM Industry Training Group is comprised of representation from NZIOB, NZIA, NZIQS, Engineering NZ, and STCF.
