The New Zealand Institute of Building (NZIOB) announced the winners of the 2018 New Zealand Building Industry Awards on Friday 24 August at a gala evening at the Cordis Hotel in Auckland. The awards, which are in their 25th year, celebrate and recognise the professional excellence of individuals and teams in the building and construction process, rather than the project or completed structure.

This year, the NZIOB implemented some significant changes to a programme that had been run annually since 1994. These changes included: broadening the appeal of the awards by creating categories that design consultants could enter either solely or as part of a contractor/consultant team (achieved without adding to the number of award categories); moving to an online entry process; adding glamour to the gala dinner through location, entertainment, and programme enhancements; and amplifying the networking aspects of the awards night, which is an acknowledged strength of the event.

These changes were embraced by industry. The awards entries were up 30%, and the table sales for the awards night increased by 20%. What has been particularly pleasing this year is that not only has the awards received entries from design consultants into the new categories that were created this year, the number of companies that entered the traditional Cost-band contractor categories has broadened also.

To use judging parlance, the refreshed New Zealand Building Industry Awards reflects a well envisaged upgrade to a classic structure. It has maintained the traditional programme strengths, while incorporating greater functionality and ease of use, all tied through to a smarter looking appearance. The feedback from award night attendees was that the awards had taken a big step up in 2018.
