Emily Hall – Master of Architecture, Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington, Pōneke | Wellington
Emily Hall is a passionate and enthusiastic advocate for sustainability and innovation in the building industry. She has excelled academically in the Master of Architecture program during her studies at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington alongside supporting others through tutoring and acting as a student representative.
In her video entry Emily suggested designing and building modular living pods made from sustainable bio-based materials. She suggested these should be adaptable over time depending on the users needs, for example modules could be added when more space was needed and sold back to downsize. Her concept promotes circular processes and could be used to fix other problems such as potential disaster relief accommodation.
Emily is eager to put her ideas into practice and to work with industry professionals to make a real difference. Her long-term aspiration is to be involved with “entirely revolutionising the philosophy of building in New Zealand with a complete move to biomaterial and designing for deconstruction methods and other circular practices which consider not only cradle to gate, but cradle to cradle construction.”
Islam Khaled-Abbas – Carpentry Level 4, BCITO, Tāmaki | Auckland
Islam Khaled-Abbas is an articulate, mature and thoughtful carpentry apprentice based in Tāmaki | Auckland.
Islam’s idea addresses the issue of mental health in the construction industry with a simple and effective solution. He suggests that a fundamental counselling course be integrated into the Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) programme to equip site leaders with effective communication tools and strategies to address mental health issues on site.
Site leaders play a pivotal role in creating supporting environments and they need to be set up for success with a good understanding of common practice and recommended actions. Islam remarked that mental health of workers is not just a personal problem – but one of productivity, quality of work, relationships and safety.
Islam has taken on work outside of his official training to help build his experience and confidence. He is driven to continually improve on his skills and knowledge. Long term he hopes to own his own residential construction business with the goal of producing “visually appealing and technically sound homes and structures that clients who have spent their lifelong savings on can enjoy and be proud of.”
Yu Li – PhD in Civil Engineering, University of Canterbury, Ōtautahi | Christchurch
Yu Li is currently completing her PhD in Civil Engineering at Canterbury University. While researching she has also presented at conferences internationally and has published several academic papers.
Her idea submitted for this award is taken from the work she is completing towards her PhD thesis. Her study focuses on collecting data on how and where roads are used by using a newly developed and cost-effective Internet of Things (IoT) proptotype. The data collected can be used to automatically predict traffic positioning in difference scenarios.
It can be used by engineers for improved planning and can also help prolong pavement life by better calibrating equipment used by contractors for pavement maintenance and construction. This ultimately means more effective and longer lasting roading solutions. The unique IoT technology can be widely applied in various areas of construction data collection, such as smart buildings, construction safety monitoring, and house building.
Completing a PhD can be all consuming but Yu is determined to maintain balance in her life.
“Enjoy work! Enjoy life! Is my motto. Even under high work pressure, I stick to my routine. Focused work, Zumba, and dancing are constants in my life.”
Yu Li – PhD in Civil Engineering, University of Canterbury, Ōtautahi | Christchurch
The judges were very impressed with Yu Li’s innovative and practical idea and wanted to learn more about her study. They could tell that the research and the tireless work she was putting into communicating her findings would be very valuable to the construction industry – not just here in Aotearoa but worldwide. They are certain the future will be bright for Yu Li and can’t wait to see the positive impact she has on the industry.
