What attracted you to a career in the building industry?
I was first attracted to the industry as I did not want a 9am to 5pm desk job. I knew I needed a career that would mentally challenge me and push me to strive to be the best I can, along with learning new skills and being able to build relationships with people from all walks of life.
What do you love about the building industry?
I love the fast pace of the building industry, where every day brings new challenges and also new exciting moments. Everything in the industry is always being reviewed and we are consistently looking to improve how to carry out works on-site and in the design phases of the project. The industry is also pushing forward in the innovation and technology space which is exciting to be a part of.
What do you believe the future of the building industry looks like?
A collaborative working environment where the risks are shared for best for project outcome. I see there becoming a lot more prefabbed components becoming available as this reduces on-site labour and de-risks quality/waste on-site.
What role do you believe the NZIOB plays in the building industry?
NZIOB plays an important role in promoting our industry in a positive light, providing advocacy to ensure our voice is heard, and in supporting members and non-members to develop knowledge and skills not always found elsewhere. The opportunity to be a part of this team and provide a voice on behalf of tomorrow's leaders, is one I am very excited about.
