2018 Review / 2019 Preview

News from the

As NZIOB members return from their summer break to resume roles across the construction supply chain, we can collectively look back on a year that has tested the industry’s capacity, and the financial resilience of some businesses within our sector. We also look ahead to a year in which the forecasted value of construction project work streams remains at an historically high levels. With many NZIOB members running some of our country’s larger construction companies, design practices, specialist trades firms, and consultancies, our membership is acutely aware of the challenges and opportunities that such buoyant construction times bring.

The NZIOB is not immune to market challenges and opportunities either. Some of the areas in which the NZIOB responded to external pressures in 2018 included:

  • The biennial NZIOB Strategy Day in February 2018, which was raised to another level by having NZIOB Council-agreed challenge topics provided to attendees, who paired-up to propose strategies to counter identified macro and micro threats, so as to position the Institute for success. A successful follow-on were the recent Chapter strategy sessions that were undertaken with the NZIOB’s CEO. The 2018-2020 Strategic Plan, including the current 60-day goals, can be viewed here;
  • The successful refresh of our annual awards programme, including renaming it to the New Zealand Building Industry Awards, resulted in multiple improvements being undertaken. This process led to a 30% increase in entries, and a 20% rise in attendee numbers at the Gala Dinner; and
  • The launch of Building Legends, an initiative of NZIOB President, Graeme Birkhead. The positive feedback from those who attended the 2 x Auckland and 1 x Christchurch workshops confirmed that the NZIOB is on the right track with its first foray into training.

For 2019, the NZIOB will continue to expand and develop the New Zealand Building Industry Awards and Building Legends programmes, while the hosting of the inaugural BIMinNZ Conference will be a focus in the first half of the year. On a more strategic level, the implementation of a new governance structure for the NZIOB and the focus on developing programmes and events for young construction practitioners (see story No. 2), will see the NZIOB advancing its strategic objectives.
