The NZIOB and GIB® are delighted to announce and congratulate all finalists in the 2022 New Zealand Building Industry Awards. Finalist interviews are currently being arranged for the final round of judging. The New Zealand Building Industry Awards Ceremony & Gala Dinner is on 2 September at the Cordis Hotel.

Ticket sales are now open for the NZIOB Charitable Education Trust Rugby Lunch confirmed for Friday, 15 July, the day before Ireland plays the All Blacks at Sky Stadium, Wellington. The guest speaker for the event is All Black former Captain, Kieran Read.

Save the date for the 2023 BIMinNZ Conference

BIMinNZ is a one-day conference on Building Information Modelling (BIM) representing an industry partnership between the NZIOB and the BIMinNZ Steering Group. The inaugural BIMinNZ Conference in 2019 drew an audience of 270 and was considered a great success. The second BIMinNZ Conference will be held in Wellington on Thursday, 23 March 2023.

Meet the Team – Raynor Redman

Meet Raynor Redman, NZIOB’s Events Manager. Raynor began with the Institute on 2 May, replacing Chloe Stephen, who has taken maternity leave. This is a full-time role, and she is on contract until December. Raynor has extensive events management experience and is the joint owner of events management company, Twelve Conferences + Events.

Southern Region to launch new Otago Branch

Big Budget boost for Construction Sector Accord

The 2022 Budget included $37M of new funding for the Construction Sector Accord to deliver the new Transformation Plan 2022-2025. Accord Transformation Director Dean Kimpton said, "This new funding is a significant step forward for the Accord and we are determined that it will help unlock the sector's potential to transform its productivity, its innovation, its sustainability, and its health and safety record."

Collaboration creates solutions for Kiwi construction threat

Researchers from the Universities of Canterbury and Auckland, supported by the Earthquake Commission, BRANZ and Concrete NZ, have found how to fix earthquake-prone precast concrete hollow-core floors. The ReCast Project team spent the last four years testing and verifying retrofit solutions to strengthen buildings with precast floors, which have been widely used since the mid-1980s.

MBIE proposes an extension of transition for insulation rules

Tougher insulation rules date for new homes could be pushed out. A six-month extension is being proposed to the date at which better insulation for new houses will be required. The changes double the requirement for roof insulation, increase the performance requirements for windows, and raise requirements for underfloor insulation.

The Government’s 2022 Budget announced a significant infrastructure fund, with $61.9B forecast to be spent on infrastructure over the next five years. This includes a substantial amount of health infrastructure and affordable housing - $1.8B was announced to improve housing outcomes, including $1.0B to support the delivery of public and transitional housing.
