BIMinNZ Conference – a collaborative effort

News from the

The inaugural BIMinNZ Conference was held at Te Papa in Wellington on Wednesday the 8th of May. With 270 plus in attendance, and a cast of relevant and inspiring national and international speakers, the event was a great success. While the programme was a key drawcard, the large turnout also demonstrates there is a great deal of interest from companies that operate in the building industry, to better understand the ‘here now’ construction technology.
In curating the BIMinNZ Conference, the NZIOB was fortunate to have an engaged Conference Committee, led my NZIOB member, Dennis Burns. This group had an instinctive feel for international and local projects that attendees would be interested in hearing about, while also being able to identify speakers they knew could cover the range of topics viewed as important to be discussed at the BIMinNZ Conference.
It was advantageous also, that the Conference Committee members are well known within the New Zealand BIM communities; this set the BIMinNZ Conference apart, as a forum that was envisaged and delivered by industry, for industry. Another key aspect was that attendees could hear from global practitioners who had completed or were undertaking BIM-enabled projects. Some of those projects were significant: a new multi-billion-dollar transit line in Kuala Lumpur, and Denver International Airport. All sessions were videoed and will be available as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) tools for NZIOB members.
The feedback from attendees and event stakeholders is that there is wide support for a follow-up BIMinNZ Conference in 2021. A highlights reel of the 2019 BIMinNZ Conference is currently being finalised, and will be distributed mid-June.
