Online modules to better understand the Building Code

New Zealand’s building regulatory system is built on the Building Act 2004 and anchored by the performance-based Building Code. MBIE’s Building Performance Team has made online learning modules available, which provide a great introductory overview of New Zealand’s building regulatory system.

A BRANZ funded report from GS1 New Zealand has found that New Zealand’s building and construction industry can lift its poor productivity by establishing a digital database on building products.

Construction boom triggers workforce demand forecast

Work is underway by the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) to get a better picture of the number of construction and infrastructure workers needed by the construction sector over the next 15 years. The research project will forecast workforce demand to cover residential and commercial construction as well as civil infrastructure like roading, three waters (drinking, waste, and storm), hospitals and schools.

The number of female apprentices working in the male-dominated trades (such as construction) more than doubled this year, from 845 last year to 1785. This has come as part of a broader spike since the Labour-led Government made all apprenticeships free in July this year, part of an effort to stimulate the economy after the Covid-19 outbreak. BDO release third annual New Zealand Construction Survey Report

Leading Global Accounting & Advisory Firm BDO have released their third annual New Zealand Construction Survey Report. The Survey is divided into two parts: the state of the sector prior to the impact of Covid-19; and the initial consequences of and responses to the impact of COVID-19. After a tumultuous year, the Survey Report shows a ‘game of halves’ for the industry, with COVID-19 being the ‘half-time’ whistle.

Otago construction labour shortage

A new study commissioned by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), the Dunedin City Council and consultancy firm, Aukaha, estimates that an extra 1000 construction workers will be required in the Otago region for each of the next ten years. Driving that demand is in excess of 100 major construction projects, foremost of which is the new $1.4 billion Dunedin Hospital – billed as one of the largest vertical infrastructure projects that has ever been undertaken in New Zealand.
