Effective September 2019, NZIOB’s CEO, Malcolm Fleming, was appointed Deputy Chair of the Construction Industry Council (CIC) – the construction industry’s peak body on which the CEOs or Chairs/Presidents of 30+ industry associations sit. This is a key industry leadership role that endorses the NZIOB’s increased visibility and growing reputation as a valued industry stakeholder. Malcolm also Chair’s the CIC’s ‘Industry Attractiveness’ working group, which saw the CIC fund an ambitious initiative designed to promote construction careers to college-aged students. That programme of work carries the working title, Constructa Career.
A key role for the CIC over the next two years will be to coordinate the work programmes of its member associations so that they support the overarching goals of the Construction Sector Accord. The Construction Sector Accord is a government and industry partnership that was announced in April this year. The NZIOB has several active workstreams that align with the Construction Sector Accord, namely its technology-focused construction conferences (increase productivity), Building Legends workshops (raise capability), and its ongoing work as commentator on/contributor to the topic of procurement and fair risk transfer (improve resilience).
The government and media are very focused on the construction sector and its well-publicised challenges. Through its own initiatives and via its leadership role within the CIC, the NZIOB is a key contributor to reimagine the construction sector as one that is productive, profitable, and attractive.
