Update on Workforce Development Councils

The establishment of the six Workforce Development Councils (WDCs) is well advanced, which includes the standing-up of the Construction and Infrastructure WDC. Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are being sought from construction industry leaders who have an interest in becoming a member of the Construction and Infrastructure WDC Appointments Committee.

Real-time employee monitoring survey

Real-time employee monitoring, one of the basic infrastructures for building a smart construction site, is already beginning to be implemented worldwide. NZIOB members are invited to participate in a BRANZ-funded Massey University School of Built Environment study into real-time employee monitoring.

Cost pressures in busy construction industry start to ramp up

Recent Stats NZ data shows that for the December quarter, the construction industry was charging out 0.5 percent more than it was in the previous quarter. This included a 0.9 percent increase in building prices and a 0.8 percent rise in the cost of construction services such as carpentry.

Save the date for NZ Building Industry Awards Gala Dinner

We are delighted to announce that, following last year’s successful multi-venue live-stream format, the New Zealand Building Industry Awards Ceremony & Gala Dinner will once again be held across three locations: Auckland (Cordis Hotel), Wellington (Te Papa), and Christchurch (Town Hall); and will also be live-streamed. The confirmed date for the Awards Ceremony & Dinner is Friday, 13 August 2021.

New YPA Committee Chair

The NZIOB wishes to thank Farran Inglis for his commitment and drive during his 2020 tenure as Chair of the Institute’s Young Professional Advisor (YPA) committee, and we are pleased to announce that Adam Baxter has been appointed as the new Chair for 2021. Adam was a member of the NZIOB YPA and Southern Region Committees in 2020, so is well versed in what the NZIOB is trying to achieve within the construction industry.

YPA Committee Regional vacancies

Due to a desire to increase the diversity of the existing Young Professional Advisor (YPA) Committee, combined with the requirement to fill YPA vacancies that have occurred due to some 2020 YPAs no longer being eligible (age wise) to continue in 2021, there are three regional YPA spots to fill. Expressions of Interests (EOIs) are being sought for the three regional YPA roles.

NZIOB Carters Central Region Golf Day

The sold-out NZIOB Carters Central Region Golf Day was held in Lower Hutt on Friday 13 February. After a heavy rain shower in the morning, the sun came out, creating perfect conditions for a round of golf, at an event in which the full cross-section of the supply-chain was represented. Our hole sponsors came to the party, hosting a variety of competitions and refreshments around the course, and the Fireshield drinks carts kept the cold drinks flowing.
