Young people flocking to trade jobs post-lockdown

Statistics have shown a large increase in the number of young workers flocking to the construction industry, amidst a nationwide industry push for apprenticeships. Stats NZ revealed a 17 per cent increase in workers aged between 15-19 joining the industry in November 2021, the largest of all age brackets by at least five per cent. The industry experienced an 8.6 increase of workers overall. 

It’s news that encourages NZ Construction Industry Council Chief Executive, Graham Burke, who said the industry has been desperate to see formal training opportunities for young people provided. 

“There has been a change in recent years that sees the trades being seen as a more viable pathway, which is positive,” said Burke.
