MBIE proposes an extension of transition for insulation rules

Tougher insulation rules date for new homes could be pushed out. A six-month extension is being proposed to the date at which better insulation for new houses will be required. The changes double the requirement for roof insulation, increase the performance requirements for windows, and raise requirements for underfloor insulation.

The Government’s 2022 Budget announced a significant infrastructure fund, with $61.9B forecast to be spent on infrastructure over the next five years. This includes a substantial amount of health infrastructure and affordable housing - $1.8B was announced to improve housing outcomes, including $1.0B to support the delivery of public and transitional housing.

 

NZIOB recognises member achievements

Two NZIOB members were recently presented NZIOB Awards for their contribution to the industry. Anthony Leighs was made a Fellow of the NZIOB, and Graeme Earl was presented with a Regional Honor Award. Anthony has won both the Young Achiever and the Supreme Awards, and Graeme has served on the NZIOB National Board since 2018.

Housing and building sectors missing from Emissions Reduction Plan

The Government has announced its plan to get to zero carbon emissions by 2050, but more can be done with housing.
Property Council New Zealand says one of the biggest ways to reduce emissions is to encourage high-quality intensification of our housing supply across metropolitan centres and along transit routes.

Save the date – the NZIOB Charitable Education Trust’s 2022 ‘Night at the Trots’ fundraiser is being held at Alexandra Park Raceway in Auckland on Thursday, 30 June. ‘Night at the Trots’ will provide you and your guests with a fun night of racing and entertainment, including raffles and sweeps.

 

 

Regional events are back!

With the move to orange, regional events are back. The NZIOB Kalmar Annual Fishing Competition held on 6 May attracted over 170 keen participants and the NZIOB Central Region’s Golf Day also held on Friday, 6 May was a huge success with 28 teams competing. NZIOB thanks the sponsors of these two events for their generous support.

A reminder that entries for the NZIOB National Student Awards are open and close on Tuesday, 31 May 2022. To recap, the National Student Awards replace the Institute’s three regional awards with a single programme thereby ensuring that students are recognised by the full construction industry.

Rebalancing New Zealand’s Immigration System

The Government has announced changes to New Zealand’s immigration settings to address the immediate skill shortages. The changes include a new Green List to attract high skilled migrants by providing a pathway to residency for globally hard to fill roles. The list features 85 hard to fill roles including construction, engineering, trades, and tech.

Meet the Team – Hayley Larsen

Meet Hayley Larsen, NZIOB’s Operations Manager. Hayley took up the role on 2 May following the departure of Susan Duley and is looking forward to meeting NZIOB members. She is contracted to the Institute for 20 hours per week. Hayley has extensive events management experience and owns an events management company, Twelve Conferences + Events.
