Business advisory firm BDO's annual construction sector report shows the industry was struggling with product shortages and significant pressures from higher material costs and wages.

The winners of the 2021 New Zealand Building Industry Awards were announced on Friday, 13 August at a gala evening at the Cordis Hotel, Auckland. With 680 guests in attendance, it was the biggest ceremony ever held in the 28-year history of the Awards. The GIB® Supreme Award was won by Farzam Farzadi from Beca for the Digital Delivery Processes on the Waikato River to Redoubt water supply programme.

With all of New Zealand currently in Level 4 Lockdown, it is timely to remind all our members of the COVID-19 advice and resources available to everyone. The overriding message is that for building, construction, and maintenance services to be undertaken at Alert Level 4, at least one of the following must apply: that the work is required to address immediate risks to health and safety; or that the work relates to nationally important infrastructure.

The NZIOB’s Young Professional Advisor (YPA) Committee serves the role of providing strategic guidance to the NZIOB National Board from the perspective of millennials. One of their recent proposals was for the NZIOB to produce a construction-related podcast, and we are pleased to announce that this project is well underway.

On 10 August, NZIOB members from the Southern Region attended a site visit to Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre in Christchurch, hosted by Ōtākaro and CPB. Members got to see inside this exciting key anchor project, and some of the spaces that will be available when it’s all complete – this included the 50-metre competition pool, diving pool, aquatic leisure area, and multi-purpose indoor courts.
