First two CoVE’s announced: Primary & Construction sectors

Education Minister Chris Hipkins has announced that two successful groups have been confirmed to establish the first two Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs) – a Primary Sector CoVE and a Construction CoVE. The construction and primary sectors were chosen as the pilot CoVEs in response to the skills shortage and rapid technological changes happening in these sectors.

As covered in our 31 July issue of News from the Source, this year’s NZIOB AGM and accompanying site visit to Christ Church Cathedral were filmed, with the aim of creating a short highlights reel that the Institute can use to showcase what a regional NZIOB event looks like. MBIE’s Building for Climate Change – consultation now open

MBIE seeks your views on proposals to increase the operational efficiency of buildings, and to reduce the embodied carbon across the lifecycle of buildings as part of the Building for Climate Change Programme. This is the first public consultation under the Programme – the building and construction sector’s contribution to New Zealand’s goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

NZ Construction sites flying flags to mark World Suicide Prevention Day

Hundreds of construction sites around New Zealand are flying flags to mark World Suicide Prevention Day and to spread the message about improving mental health to prevent suicide. Mates in Construction, an organisation aiming to fight the high rate of suicide among the construction industry's workers, has organised the event and says the construction sector has the highest rate of any commercial sector in the country.

How the construction industry is tackling waste

The construction industry is one of the country’s largest waste producers by weight. It makes up around half of all waste going to landfill, but industry leaders are creating innovations to recover valuable materials instead of letting them go to waste. Auckland Council’s Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund (WMIF) funds projects from businesses, local iwi, and education and community groups that will divert waste from landfill.

Commercial construction activity hit harder by lockdown

Non-residential building activity led a sector slump in the June quarter, Statistics NZ data shows. For the three months, residential building volumes fell 19 per cent while commercial and other non-residential work fell 27 per cent. Commercial construction projects were more affected by social distancing requirements than residential builds.
