The NZIOB Charitable Trust Awards were created in 2017, providing two $10,000 ($20,000 in total) scholarships that year and an additional two $10,000 scholarships in 2018. Those who have received scholarships these past two years submitted proposals that fit the Charitable Trust’s purpose of providing funding: to research projects, innovations, or inventions, that if realised, will lead to the betterment of the building industry.

In 2017, one recipient used their scholarship to conduct full-scale tests of structural and architectural systems designed to eliminate construction waste. The other winner that year used the funding to travel to Canada to investigate how to deliver building facade training in New Zealand.

In 2018, one scholarship allowed for the creation of a 1:1 scale scale prototype to support the recipient's work in developing a prefabricated building envelope system for mass timber construction using cross-laminated timber (CLT). The other 2018 scholarship winner used the funding to progress a course of study focusing on the development of traditional timber-only (no metal) connections to create new sustainable manufacturing solutions that can only be produced by robotic milling.

Entries are now open for the 2019 NZIOB Charitable Trust Awards, which will again provide two $10,000 scholarships. Proposals must potentially contribute to the advancement of some aspect of design, construction, or management of buildings in New Zealand. The scope or range of topics for any proposed project is open-ended as the Award looks to encourage each applicant’s initiative to introduce improvements to the industry.

The NZIOB Charitable Trust is an active and effective arm of the NZIOB that enables the Institute to promote higher performance and increase productivity across the building industry. The Rules and Instructions documents can be downloaded from the NZIOB Charitable Trust website. Applications close on 30 June, with the winners of the 2019 scholarships being announced at the New Zealand Building Industry Awards on Friday, 23 August.
