With nearly 25 years’ experience working in both the New Zealand and UK construction markets, Sonia’s career encompasses project management roles both as an independent consultant and an in-house employee. Currently Project Director at YMCA Christchurch, Sonia can point to a career that has seen her involved in a broad range of projects encompassing commercial base builds and refurbishments, retail fit-outs and rollouts, airport terminals, tertiary education facilities, museums, and gallery spaces. At the YMCA, she is overseeing a mixed-use development that will support a youth focussed Not for Profit.

Prior to moving to Christchurch in 2013, Sonia sat on the NZIOB Chapter Board, and was the Regional Convenor for the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). In the latter role, Sonia was instrumental in establishing the NAWIC National Council. Sonia has maintained a strong connection with the NZIOB since moving south, having been a member of the Conference Committee that delivered the NZIOB’s 2015 Smart Conference, which was held in Christchurch.

Sonia is looking forward to taking up her role on the incoming NZIOB National Board. She will look to continue the development of NZIOB’s focus on issues that impact the building industry, in particular, mental health and diversity. 2019 marks a big year for Sonia, along with her appointment to the NZIOB National Board, she is a finalist for the Helen Tippett Award in the 2019 NAWIC Excellence Awards. She sees a lovely tie-in between these two achievements: Sonia was a student of Helen Tippett’s, and Helen was a member of the NZIOB Foundation Council (1983–1985); Sonia is proud to be following in Helen’s footsteps.
