Like many professional membership organisations, the NZIOB is constantly challenged with ensuring its membership offerings and activities are relevant and responsive to the younger generation, who are now developing their careers within the construction industry.

Addressing this issue was a topic that arose at the 2018 Strategy Day, with an outcome being the appointment of a Young Practitioner Adviser, who will provide a millennial voice at NZIOB National Council meetings. The Institute’s advertisement for this strategic role yielded close to 30 applicants. Auckland-based James Reed of Dominion Constructors was selected, with James attending his first National Council meeting in December.
 
James is a graduate of Unitec (Bachelor of Construction Management) and has spent his career to date with Dominion Constructors, where he currently holds the role of Project Director. James is well known to the NZIOB, being a member of the Institute and the winner of an Excellence Award in the Young Achiever category at the NZIOB’s annual awards programme in 2017.
 
With the calibre of candidates applying for this new national role being so high, the Chapter Presidents have accepted the Role Appointment Committee's suggestion that short-listed candidates be offered Young Practitioner Adviser roles on the regional Chapter Boards.
 
“I am excited to have been elected as the NZIOB’s first Young Practitioner Adviser” says James. “I see that the Institute has an important role to play: promoting our industry in a positive light; providing advocacy to ensure our voice is heard; and in supporting members and non-members to develop knowledge and skills not always found elsewhere. The opportunity to be part of the NZIOB’s national governance group, and to provide a voice on behalf of tomorrow’s leaders, is one I am very enthusiastic about. I am also looking forward to working with the wider Young Practitioner Adviser network to increase membership and to create events that all young professionals in the building sector will be encouraged to attend and to network at.”

The newly-created Young Practitioner Adviser role is for a 12-month period, with the initiative’s goal being to ensure that the NZIOB remains relevant and exciting for the next generation.
