In 2015 the NZIOB Charitable Trust started the process of refreshing its approach, getting clear about its purpose, and mapping out a strategy to undertake an ongoing programme of fundraising enabling an ambitious level of scholarship gifting to be maintained while building its capital base.
The level of scholarships awarded in 2017 represented 50% of what the Charitable Trust’s funds were at the start of 2017. This says a great deal about the confidence the trustees had in their ability to fundraise and the desire they shared to make an impact from day one. The view was that there was no point waiting to build a capital base that allowed for awards to be funded from investment income before they offered scholarships. That would take too long they said, the building industry needs the incentivisation now to encourage meaningful research, invention, and innovation.
One of the successful events the NZIOB Charitable Trust adopted was the annual Rugby Lunch in Wellington, which occurs on the day prior to the year’s Wellington Test Match.
The details on past and upcoming NZIOB Charitable Trust Rugby Lunches are:
- 2017 (the day prior to All Blacks vs. British & Irish Lions) / Guest speaker: Sean Fitzpatrick
- 2018 (the day prior to All Blacks vs. France) / Guest speaker: John Kirwan
- 2019 (the day prior to All Blacks vs. Springboks) / Guest speaker: Graham Henry
Table sales are now open for the 2019 NZIOB Charitable Trust Rugby Lunch with Graham Henry.
