Dennis Burns (MNZIOB, CBP) has been chairing the ‘bim industry training group’, a consortium of NZIOB, NZIA, IPENZ, NZIQS and NZSTCF members who were provided with free training at the 2015 ‘BIM Best Practice NZ’ workshops. Dennis and Glenn Jowett are the NZIOB’s representatives on this group, and they have been instrumental in distilling two days of BRE training down into the half-day workshops that were rolled out under the bim101-an insight branding.
Dennis was a natural candidate to lead this initiative. A Quantity Surveyor (QS) by training, Dennis started his career working as a QS on Government projects, followed by stints as QS, construction manager & project manager for both main contractors and specialist trades. Since 1993, Dennis has been a director at Wellington-based Archaus Architects, who were an early adopter of Building Information Modelling (BIM). Archaus is now recognised as a leading proponent of BIM, and considered an Australasian leader in this field.
Dennis’ industry experience along with a desire to bring more efficiencies into the design and construction process, has led to him taking a passionate interest in BIM over the past decade. Dennis is “looking forward to a future in which there is a greater and more consistent uplift in the use of BIM, and to a time when consistent standards are more widely implemented”. Throughout the bim101-an insight seminars, Dennis was often extending an invitation for attendees to give him a call post the workshops, should they need assistance with their BIM adoption. Dennis really does care about making our industry more efficient.
From an NZIOB perspective, Dennis has been wonderful to deal with on the bim101-an insight project, and we look forward to continuing that close collaboration on next year’s bim201.
