One of the sadder aspects of 2018 was the news that one of the Institute’s Past Presidents had passed away, being the first such occasion in the NZIOB’s 35-year history. That announcement occurred in June, with the death of John Bullen (National President No 13, 2007-2009). In December the Institute lost another Past President, Peter Beddek (National President No. 3, 1987-1989).

Auckland-born Peter was a Quantity Surveyor (QS) who spent a good part of his career as a partner at Maltby’s in Wellington. He held the distinction of being both a National President of the NZIOB and a National President of the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors (1996-1997). Peter was also President of the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (1999-2001). Peter was an accomplished QS, and a notable industry figure during the 1980s and 1990s. Peter’s career was drawn to a premature end when he became inflicted with a pervasive illness. making him increasingly reliant on a wheelchair for the past 20 years of his life.

The NZIOB was represented at an occasion to celebrate Peter’s life by: Past President, Gina Jones; and Chief Executive, Malcolm Fleming.
