ArchEngBuild 2018 will be held in Wellington on Wednesday the 4th of July through to Friday the 6th of July. The NZIOB sits with the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) and Engineering NZ as supporters of what is recognised as New Zealand’s premier construction focused student design competition.
The format is that the country’s top ten architectural (arch) students, top ten engineering (eng) students, and top ten construction management (build) students, are brought together for a three day-workshop. On day one the full group listens to a design brief, after which the thirty students are divided into ten teams, all of which have one arch, eng, and build representative.
On day three, the teams present their design response to the brief. The two-day period between the Wednesday brief and the Friday presentation, is an intense, fast-paced design process in which all three team members must contribute fully, in order that their final ‘pitch’ be seen to have been the result of a collaborative effort. The NZIOB’s push to add Build to the existing ArchEng in 2016 reflects the rise in recognition that there is great value in having a builder involved in the design stage of project.
There is no entry fee to ArchEngBuild, and the costs of flights and accommodation for non-Wellington based attendees are met by the event organisers. There is a $7,500 cash prize provided to the team of three ($2,500 each). A good overview of the competition can be obtained by watching the ArchEngBuild2017 Video.
For a graduate to have ArchEngBuild participation on their resume, provides them with an advantage when the time comes to enter the workforce. In the process of gaining the entry line on the CV, comes the experience of being involved in three days of high level creativity and collaboration with a high performing group who will likely become future leaders of the construction industry.
Nominations for ArchEngBuild 2018 close on Sunday the 6th of May 2018. Additional information can be found on the BRANZ website.
