Matthew was joined by Paul Jenkins, Operations Manager at Jennian Homes - who will talk about Jennian Homes' experience as a build partner working with the HDS.

The Delivery Transformation Group was formed from Project Velocity to help find ways to transform Kāinga Ora’s delivery systems starting with the Housing Delivery System (HDS) which is a delivery system designed to reduce design and construction times.

Matthew and Paul discuss learnings and continuous improvements from implementing the Housing Delivery System at Kāinga Ora and partner organisations such as Jennian Homes.

A few key takeaways: 

• Focusing on waste reduction and process optimization, led to a significant reduction in build times (e.g. from 68 days to 47 days for 3 single-story houses).
• Detailed scheduling, coordination, and accountability are critical - the number of tasks tracked increased from 55-65 to 110+ per project.
• Communication and understanding your tradespeople leads to more efficient ways of working (e.g. scheduling inspections when tradespeople are available).
• A learning culture focused on developing skills in addition to processes leads to more engaged teams and better outcomes.
• There are still opportunities for further optimization through consistent application of processes and waste reduction.
