Originally NZ Wallboards Ltd, the company was established in 1927 and manufactured plasterboard for the growing New Zealand housing market from its Auckland factory.

The opening of a new plasterboard factory in Penrose, Auckland in 1971, saw the company change its name to Winstone Wallboards Limited. This Auckland site - which also includes a plaster mill - is where Winstone Wallboards operates to this day, and is where the majority of product research and development takes place.
