Extension on home insulation deadline decided by MBIE

Radio NZ reported recently on the six-month extension to the deadline for complying with new energy efficiency regulations in homes.

MBIE has pushed the start date for wall, floor and roof insulation requirements from November to May next year because of supply chain disruptions and material shortages.

From 1 May 2023, new building work in homes must meet the new wall, floor, and roof insulation performance requirements.

NZ Certified Builders Chief Executive Malcolm Fleming said it is a very turbulent and difficult time for the industry, and builders are under immense pressure. He said builders are battling a shortage of plasterboard, supply chain constraints, skill shortages and cash-flow problems.

Malcolm reassured that many homes were already being built to the new insulation standard. He also said it is imperative the industry meets the revised deadline and that the builders are committed.
