Now that New Zealand is (hopefully) moving further away from the threat of COVID-19 Lockdowns and Alert Level changes, the NZIOB is excited to start filling our events calendar back up with some of our signature social events. Both the Southern and Central Regional Quiz Nights are long-standing annual events, enjoyed by local construction practitioners from across the full spectrum of the industry.

Staff changes at NZIOB National Office

Our National Events Manager, Kristin De Sousa, has recently moved to a new role with the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. Kristin’s role has been shared between the existing staff at National Office. Hannah Keir-Smith has moved from three-days a week to full-time to become the NZIOB Events Manager, while Niki Tyler has also increased her hours and has the new title of Membership & Events Coordinator.

2021 AGM and Elections

A date has been set for the 39th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the NZIOB. The Central Region Committee will host this year’s AGM and accompanying CPD event in Wellington on Tuesday 13 July 2021. Also coming up is the 2021 NZIOB Election, for which nominations will open on 13 April.

Construction Sector Accord & MATES partnership

The Construction Sector Accord (the Accord) has partnered with MATES in Construction NZ (MATES) to help prevent suicide in the construction sector by supporting them to get their programme out to more people. The partnership is part of the Accord’s Health and Safety workstream, delivered though the three-year Construction Sector Accord Transformation Plan.

The Government has decided to make some minor changes to the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act to enhance the effectiveness of the Act. The Review is part of a series of reforms to the building laws to lift the efficiency and quality of building work in New Zealand, provide fairer outcomes if things go wrong, and instill greater confidence in the sector.

Christchurch's Metro Sports Facility expected to open late 2022

The wait continues for the opening of Christchurch's Metro Sports Facility and a local swimming organisation is disappointed with COVID-19 delays. The $300M facility, expected to be the biggest aquatic and indoor recreation and leisure venue in the country, was announced as part of the Central City Recovery Plan and was originally due to open in early 2016.
