Honouring our Institute Members

LATEST NEWS

On Friday 30 August we celebrated excellence in the construction industry at the 2024 NZ Building People Awards. Along with recognising our fantastic finalists and winners we also took the opportunity to honour some of our outstanding Institute volunteers with Member Honour Awards.

The NZ Institute of Building relies heavily on the generosity of time, energy and care from its members. There are so many fantastic people giving their dedication and passion to the Institute – four of those people were honoured at the Awards.

Member Honour Awards

The Regional Honour Award Northern Region was awarded to Terry Buchan.

This member award was approved for Terry back in 2021 and we finally had the chance to give it to him in person at this year’s awards.
Terry Buchan has nearly 30 years of experience of practical construction and project management experience in a range of positions at Hawkins. Starting as a Project Manager with Hawkins in 1995 he worked his way up and has been the General Manager at Hawkins since the end of 2022.
Terry joined the New Zealand Institute of Building in 2009 and has made a significant contribution to the Institute since then including serving as Northern Chapter President and a National Council member from 2016-2018. He was also a member of the Awards workshop in 2017 and was the recipient of an excellence award at the 2011 Awards evening.

Thank you, Terry, for all of your time, effort, and service you have given to the Institute and the industry.

The Regional Honour Award Southern Region was awarded to Hayley Groves.

Hayley Groves has been a member of the New Zealand Institute of Building since 2011 and has made significant contributions since then. In the past Hayley has served as the Southern Region President, she was on the National Board and Council from 2016-2021, she’s also been on the Risk and Audit Committee, the Membership Approval team and recently the Membership Committee.
She has been honoured with Institute awards in the past, in 2011 she was Highly Commended in the Young Achiever category and won the Projects under $5 Million Category. She was Highly Commended in 2020 for Technology and was a finalist in last year’s awards as part of a team in the Collaboration category. Hayley is a Director at Rangzen Pro and has twenty years of construction industry experience.

Thank you, Hayley for giving so much of your time, passion and energy to the Institute.

The Regional Honour Award Central Region was awarded to Guy Marriage.

Guy Marriage is an architect, lecturer and author, he is passionate about making the world better through architecture and he’s teaching the next generation of architects to do exactly that.

Guy has spent over 20 years of teaching at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Architecture – this year taking on the role of Director of Architecture. Alongside teaching he has continued to work as a practicing architect. Guy’s passion and curiosity for architecture, engineering, and innovation in the construction industry have influenced countless industry professionals and their work.

Guy first joined as a member of the Institute in 2012 and has been an active and valued member of the Central Region. Recently Guy volunteered his time and thoughts to write an introductory essay for the start of our book celebrating and commemorating 40 years of the Institute. He has lent his dulcet tones to the Institute’s Tall Stories podcast as a guest and a host and is an asset to any quiz team who’ll have him.
Thank you, Guy for the generosity, intellect, humour and inspiration you give to the industry.

The Institute Service Medal was announced for Graeme Birkhead. Graeme couldn’t be there in person on the night so we will be presenting him with the certificate at another date.

Graeme Birkhead has been an active member of the Institute since 2015 and has been named as a Fellow. The word that comes up when you talk to people about Graeme is passion – for the industry, the institute, and the next generation. Graeme served as National President from 2017-2019 before helping to bring in constitutional changes to help the Institute become more nationally coordinated and future focused.
He was then National Chair from 2019-2021 steering the Institute through the difficult early years of Covid-19 including weekly emergency meetings. He oversaw the revamp of this very Awards and helped to start up the Institute’s Building Legends workshops. Graeme also helped to manage amalgamating the two Charitable Education Trusts into a consolidated one that would serve the whole of the country. All of his contributions can’t be listed here but Craig Hopkins sums it up best when he said “Graeme is the GOAT for the Auckland Region and the Institute.”

Thank you to Graeme for all you have done and continue to do for the Institute.
