Industry Insights: BIMSafe NZ – Integrating BIM and health and safety
Webinar posted on 16/8/2024 under Industry Insights

Kathryn Davies – Research Fellow, University of Canterbury, Building Innovation Partnership and Blair Collie – Senior Project Manager at RCP explain the BIMSafe NZ project and portal.

The project was an industry-led initiative to leverage building information modelling (BIM) to enhance health and safety in the construction industry. The project was spearheaded by the Canterbury Safety Charter and involved collaboration between contractors, BIM experts, and health and safety professionals.

The Bim Safe portal offers an excellent knowledge base for contractors looking to leverage BIM to protect workers on site. Ongoing participation across the industry will be key to maximizing its impact.

Key learnings:

  • Bim Safe provides guidance and real-world case studies on using BIM for health and safety applications like hazard identification, planning, and communication.
  • Key benefits seen in case studies include improved spatial awareness, proactive risk mitigation, and better communication across language barriers.
  • Challenges include keeping models updated amidst ongoing changes and getting site teams onboard. Overall adoption has been positive.
  • Next steps are to continue gathering feedback and case studies to improve guidance and drive ongoing industry uptake of BIM for health and safety.
