Oh, what a night!

The 2020 edition of the NZIOB’s annual awards night was unlike any of the Institute’s previous 26 annual awards gala dinners. Due to COVID-19, the evening programme was held simultaneously across three venues (Cordis, Auckland; Te Papa, Wellington; Christchurch Townhall), as well as being live-streamed for free.

NZIOB Medal

The first award of the evening, the prestigious NZIOB Medal, was awarded to Samir Govind for his commitment to the on-going evolution of the Institute, and for being an influential and respected presence in the New Zealand building industry. 

GIB Supreme Award

This year’s winner of the GIB Supreme Award was James Reed from Dominion Constructors, for his work on the University of Auckland Waiparuru Hall project. The judges commented that James demonstrated excellent leadership skills, promoted innovative solutions, and utilised an array of technologies that enhanced the project delivery.

BCITO Young Achiever Award

Rhys Mackenzie of Hawkins in Auckland was awarded Excellence for his role as Project Manager. The judges said Rhys has the qualities necessary to build on the success he has achieved to date and is an exceptional candidate for the Young Achiever Award.

Resene Projects Under $5 Million Award

Kane Blank of Aspec Construction was awarded Excellence for his work on St Peter’s Chapel in Auckland. Kane provided excellent leadership on a project that required a keen sense of buildability to deliver a building that faithfully executed the intention of the original architectural vision.

NZIOB Charitable Trust Projects $5–$10 Million Award

Nigel Bannan of Cook Brothers Construction received a Highly Commended award for his work on the Dark Sky Project in Tekapo. Nigel was also the Category Winner. The judges said the successful outcome is testament to Nigel’s strengths as both a builder and a communicator.

Steel Construction NZ Projects $10–$20 Million Award

Craig Harris of Naylor Love Canterbury was awarded Excellence for his work on New World Durham Street in Christchurch. Craig’s team-building skills and management of cultural differences helped enable the successful delivery of this complicated project.

Carters Projects $20–$35 Million Award

James Sutherland of CMP Construction was awarded Excellence for his work on the Life Apartments project in Auckland. He overcame the project challenges through his strengths in design, construction planning, and risk mitigation, achieving an excellent result on a difficult site. 

GIB Projects $35-$100 Million Award

Carl Bohnen of Naylor Love Wellington was awarded Excellence for his work on the Wellington East Girls’ College Major Redevelopment project. Carl’s leadership and communication skills ensured the success of a highly complex and challenging project.

BBD Projects Above $100 Million Award
