LATEST NEWS

There were six finalists in the BBD Projects Over $100 Million category:

• Neville McAnnalley, Leighs Construction (Mt Eden Corrections Facility: Building C, Auckland)
• Craig Body, Hawkins Central (Tauranga Crossing Retail Development Stage 2, Tauranga)
• Alun Larsen & Chris Fields, Hawkins Auckland (University of Auckland B507 Park West, Auckland)
• James Reed, Dominion Constructors (University of Auckland Waiparuru Hall, Auckland)
• Chris Murray & Dion Russell, LT McGuinness (Bowen State Building and New Zealand Defence House Fit-out, Wellington)
Steve Ritchie & Paul Wikiriwhi, Hawkins Auckland (University of Auckland B405 Engineering, Auckland)

Three Highly Commended awards and one Excellence award were presented in this category.

The first Highly Commended award went to Steve Ritchie and Paul Wikiriwhi for their work on the University of Auckland B405 Engineering project, involving construction of a new building for the University’s Engineering School. BIM allowed the project team to identify clashes and solve problems, meaning less re-work and fewer materials used. The building was required for the start of the academic year, and was completed before Christmas, ready for the University in 2020. Our judges said Steve and Paul were a great team. They empowered the successfully delivery of University of Auckland’s single-most complex building.

The second Highly Commended award went to Chris Murray and Dion Russell from LT McGuinness for their work on the Bowen State Building and New Zealand Defence House Fit-out project in Wellington. This project involved the transformation of the Bowen State Building into modern offices including an 8,500 square metre extension with new facades, seismic strengthening to 100% of National Building Standard, and new lifts and services. Chris and Dion overcame numerous challenges to complete the project to budget and meet tenant occupation dates. This was a complex strengthening job of an existing building before extensive redevelopment into A-grade offices.

The third Highly Commended award went to Neville McAnnalley from Leighs Construction for his work on the Mt Eden Corrections Facility Building C project in Auckland. This project, undertaken in the middle of the largest and busiest remand prison in the country, involved building a 7,770 square metre, multi-storey facility to accommodate 245 prisoners. The judges said this was a challenging project undertaken in a live environment. Challenges included limitations for scheduling site deliveries, no cell-phones on-site, and stringent security aspects. Neville’s leadership was instrumental in achieving project delivery on time and to budget.

James Reed of Dominion Constructors was awarded Excellence for his work on the University of Auckland Waiparuru Hall project. James was also the Category Winner. Waiparuru Hall is a hall of residence with 786 bedrooms. The narrow site is on a 45-degree bank, sloping down towards the motorway. This project provided numerous challenges over the 36-month build – design, logistics and programme being key concerns. James embraced technology, using BIM to simplify and enhance the build process. James was an integral part of the research that led to modular toilet pods replacing a traditional fit-out and changing the foundation work to a raft design. He demonstrated excellent leadership, promoted innovative solutions and utilised technology to enhance project delivery.

A few words from Brett Russell, Managing Director, Dominion Constructors…

Well done James! Having completed a Dominion cadetship in Project Management, winning the Young Achiever category in 2017, taking on this challenging project, and now being recognised by your peers for Excellence (not only in the category but also as Supreme Winner) is testament to your dedication, skill and strength of leadership. Congratulations to you and the Waiparuru team for this great accolade.
