NZIOB AGM and Christ Church Cathedral site visit

The 37th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the NZIOB was held in Christchurch on Tuesday the 28th of July. The AGM was bookended by a tour to the Christ Church Cathedral site and a presentation on that project.

Entries for the 2020 New Zealand Building Industry Awards have now closed, with an impressive number of entries in each category, and a record number of entries received overall. This success feels even sweeter considering the unusually challenging year 2020 has turned out to be. The preliminary judging round will begin shortly to determine our list of finalists.

Infrastructure Reference Group announces government funded ‘shovel ready’ projects

The Infrastructure Industry Reference Group (IRG) has announced the first government-funded infrastructure projects. Part of the $3B COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund, this first wave of funding is for $819M of Central Government funding towards projects totaling $1.3B.

Government backs construction sector with new trades training centre

Otago Polytechnic, a subsidiary of the NZ Institute of Skills and Technology, will get a new purpose-built centre in Dunedin devoted to training qualified workers for the building, construction and related trades, Infrastructure Minister Shane Jones announced on 24 July.

Rapid Mobilisation Playbook created to support fast-tracking of construction projects

A new resource – the Rapid Mobilisation Playbook – has been created to help fast-track government construction projects. The Playbook has been developed by the Construction Sector Accord in collaboration with New Zealand Government Procurement within MBIE, Aurecon, and through the Accord Forum.

PwC Tower opens in Auckland after eight years of planning and construction

New Zealand’s tallest office building, the PwC Tower on Auckland’s downtown waterfront, opened for business earlier this week, after eight years in planning and construction. Standing about 180 metres tall, the 39-level steel and glass tower offers 39,000 square metres of Auckland’s premium office space.

Site Safe Scholarships now open

Site Safe scholarship applications are now open. Each year, the Site Safe scholarships help the health and safety leaders of the future to jump start their careers by completing free higher-level training. The scholarship includes fully-funded Site Safe training towards completion of a New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) recognised New Zealand Certificate in Workplace Health and Safety Practice (Level 3).
