Two Highly Commended and one Excellence award was presented in this category.
The first Highly Commended award was presented to Hayley Groves from Tripro in Christchurch for her work on the Aldersgate project. Aldersgate is home to the Christchurch Central Methodist Parish. It replaced an 1860’s church which was demolished following the 2011 earthquake, when three men died on site. A large oak tree required protection, as it had become a place of remembrance for the men who had lost their lives. Hayley was both Project Manager and Client Representative, managing the project from conception to completion, encountering several setbacks along the way. Hayley overcame these challenges, delivering a great outcome.
The second Highly Commended award was presented to Daren Alderson of Buchan for his work on Langdons Quarter, Northlands Shopping Centre in Christchurch. Langdons Quarter is a new food and entertainment precinct. This project involved modifying and strengthening an existing building. Daren was responsible for delivering this project which came with several challenges. He navigated his way through these issues to achieve an aesthetic outcome within budget. The judges were particularly impressed by the way Daren went well outside of his discipline of architectural design, to ensure the project's success.
Kelly Hoara of Griffiths & Associates in Whangarei was awarded Excellence for his work on the Otangarei Papakāinga project. Kelly was also the Category Winner. This project undertaken for a local Māori social services trust and involved six two-bedroomed transitional housing units for whanau in need. As Project Manager, Kelly was involved right from the start. The project design, which followed traditional Māori village design principles, proved challenging for the Resource and Building Consent applications. Kelly’s involvement in the project’s consenting process went well beyond what is typically covered by a project manager.
A few words from Kelly…
It has been our privilege to play a small part in realising an amazing project that will change the lives of whanau for many generations. I would like to firstly thank the NZIOB for their promotion of the industry, and Martin and Janine Kaipo, tireless kaitiaki of Otangarei and its people. I would also like to thank Homeworld builders for their professionalism, and my Griffiths and Associates colleagues for providing me with an amazing team support structure for what was a challenging project.
