There were five finalists in the Site Safe & CHASNZ Safety Excellence category:

• Melissa Campbell, LT McGuinness (Point of Work Risk Assessment (POWRA), Auckland & Wellington)
• Teck Khing Yong & Daniel Chang Liu, Livefirm Construction (Livefirm Mitre Saw Dust Control Station, Auckland)
• Quintus Slabber, Hawkins Auckland (Recladding Methodology, Auckland)
Kevin Jury, Voideck Group (Voideck Temporary Void Platform, Wellington)
• Gary Davidson, Naylor Love Canterbury (Timber and Steel Jigs for Prefabrication Installation, Nelson)

Two Highly Commended and one Excellence award were presented in this category.

The first Highly Commended award was presented to Gary Davidson of Naylor Love Canterbury for his Timber and Steel Jigs for Prefabrication Installation initiative at Nelson Airport. Construction sites in live airports present substantial risks and hazards. Gary mitigated these by using jigs enabling the triangulated roof sections to be prefabricated inside an adjacent hangar. Prefabrication allowed those involved on the roof sections to work undercover, reducing risks caused by working at height and limiting exposure to traffic and aircraft moving around the site.  The judges said this was an excellent example of how prefabrication can eliminate significant health and safety risks.

The second Highly Commended award was presented to Kevin Jury of Voideck Group in Wellington for his Voideck Temporary Void Platform initiative. Voideck is a lightweight modular suspended temporary flooring system, designed to fill penetrations in floors to permit stairs, lift wells and other openings. The system improves workplace safety by eliminating fall zones from upper-floors and into floor pits, and providing a safe working platform in and around the void area. The judges commented that the system appears to be well-researched and engineered, and has a clear value proposition to reduce falls on construction sites.

Teck Khing (TK) Yong and Daniel Chang Liu of Livefirm Construction in Auckland were awarded Excellence for their work on the Livefirm Mitresaw Dust Control Station initiative. TK and Daniel were also the Category Winners. The Livefirm Mitre Saw Dust Control Station addresses dust extraction by collecting more than 90 per cent of dust produced. As a result, it significantly reduces dust inhalation, producing significant health benefits. TK and Daniel have designed an innovative, mobile, cyclone and bucket system that uses a cyclone effect to trap dust. While the primary benefit is reducing dust inhalation, it also reduces cleaning time, maintenance costs and energy consumption. This innovation produced multiple health and safety benefits, and resulted in an enhanced working environment.
