There were four finalists in the Steel Construction NZ Projects $10-$20 Million category:
• Josh Stevens, Cook Brothers Construction (Inflight Logistics Warehouse, Auckland)
• Dylan Kane, NZ Strong Group (Airways Air Traffic Control Facility, Auckland)
• Kane Almond & Cameron Hartnell, Savory Construction (Auckland Dental School – University of Otago, Auckland)
• Craig Harris, Naylor Love Canterbury (New World Durham Street, Christchurch)
One Highly Commended and one Excellence award were presented in this category.
The Highly Commended award was presented to Dylan Kane of NZ Strong for his work on the Airways Air Traffic Control Facility in Auckland. Dylan managed the construction of the facility, along with housing and protecting critical infrastructure at Auckland Airport. Dylan simultaneously undertook site design and project management responsibilities for the build. With Auckland International Airport’s Head Office opposite, traffic management was crucial throughout construction. Weekly coordination meetings facilitated motivation and accountability. Design changes, scope creep, and a major cladding change late in the project provided further challenges. Comprehensive coordination and design management ensured this detailed project was a success.
Craig Harris of Naylor Love Canterbury was awarded Excellence for his work on New World Durham Street in Christchurch. Craig was also the Category Winner. The complication of this 5,000 square metre supermarket project was that the site was contaminated with hydrocarbons and asbestos, the remediation of which would have proved expensive. The solution was a piled raft foundation using screw piles and a 300mm thick base slab, topped with a post-tensioned concrete floor. With up to 120 workers on-site, Craig engaged personnel through a range of activities including on-site BBQs, silent auctions, and raffles raising money for charities. Construction took place in a dense traffic environment making logistics a constant challenge. Craig’s team-building skills and management of cultural differences helped enable the successful delivery of this complicated project.
