The Government has decided to make some minor changes to the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Act to enhance the effectiveness of the Act. The Review is part of a series of reforms to the building laws to lift the efficiency and quality of building work in New Zealand, provide fairer outcomes if things go wrong, and instill greater confidence in the sector.

The wait continues for the opening of Christchurch's Metro Sports Facility and a local swimming organisation is disappointed with COVID-19 delays. The $300M facility, expected to be the biggest aquatic and indoor recreation and leisure venue in the country, was announced as part of the Central City Recovery Plan and was originally due to open in early 2016.

New Zealand’s new Privacy Act took effect from 1 December 2020. The NZ Construction Industry Council (NZCIC) had the chance to sit down with privacy and risk operations experts, Mark and Caroline Carver of TwoBlackLabs, to learn about the revisions to the Privacy Act that were instituted in December.

Recent Stats NZ data shows that for the December quarter, the construction industry was charging out 0.5 percent more than it was in the previous quarter. This included a 0.9 percent increase in building prices and a 0.8 percent rise in the cost of construction services such as carpentry.

Standards New Zealand has been commissioned by the construction industry to undertake a review of NZS 3910 Conditions of contract for buildings and civil engineering construction. NZIOB members are asked to contribute by completing a survey, which will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

A ''remarkable'' drop in unemployment has been announced, being most unexpected given the impact of last year’s COVID-19 lockdowns. Statistics NZ data showed unemployment stood at 4.9 percent at the end of December, well below economists' expectations, while the accompanying household labour force survey found that many of the jobs lost were offset by construction.
