Budget Overview from BDO

The Government’s 2022 Budget announced a significant infrastructure fund, with $61.9B forecast to be spent on infrastructure over the next five years. This includes a substantial amount of health infrastructure and affordable housing - $1.8B was announced to improve housing outcomes, including $1.0B to support the delivery of public and transitional housing.

The Government has announced its plan to get to zero carbon emissions by 2050, but more can be done with housing.
Property Council New Zealand says one of the biggest ways to reduce emissions is to encourage high-quality intensification of our housing supply across metropolitan centres and along transit routes.

Rebalancing New Zealand’s Immigration System

The Government has announced changes to New Zealand’s immigration settings to address the immediate skill shortages. The changes include a new Green List to attract high skilled migrants by providing a pathway to residency for globally hard to fill roles. The list features 85 hard to fill roles including construction, engineering, trades, and tech.

BRANZ would like to invite NZIOB members to take part in an industry-wide survey on the uptake of engineered wood products (EWPs) in the construction sector. This survey also seeks to track the sector’s contributions to meeting New Zealand’s climate change commitments.

COVID-19 update for the building and construction sector

As of 11:59pm last night, all of New Zealand has moved to the Orange setting of the Traffic Light system. Keep an eye out for updated Construction Protocols and Standards on the CHASNZ website. Also, new workplace guidance is now available to help employers update their health and safety risk assessments, especially in relation to vaccination requirements.
